Meet The Team Steven Broadbent - Head of Estimating & Contracts

In today’s Meet the Team we want to introduce you to Steven Broadbent, our Head of Contracts & Estimating. Find out what he does when he isn’t managing our expert fitters and tradesmen, or the Sutton Juniors football team…

1. Let’s start from the beginning. In brief, describe the role of your job at Ultimate and what you do?

Head of Contracts & Estimating – to take ownership of new projects secured by our Sales Team and ensure that the operations team deliver it to a high standard, safely, to budget and on programme. As well as that, to ensure that every new enquiry is fully costed and presented back to the new or existing client within our agreed timescale and format.

2. All things considered, what type of work is most likely to spark the fire in your brain? What is your dream project?

A high value, design-focused project, encompassing the full spectrum of construction – from strip out, demolition, and building elements through to Cat A and B fit-out. It would include all mechanical and electrical services, finally topped off with the FFE.

3. What incredible new invention would make your job easier and turbo charge your productivity?

Sunshine – work is always more enjoyable when the sun is shining!

4. When all the hard work is over, what is the most satisfying aspect of your job at Ultimate?

Handing a project back to an appreciative client, on time and to a high standard,  is very rewarding for the entire design and delivery team.

5. If you could send out just one message that sums up your industry, what would you say?

Fast-paced, challenging and rewarding when you have a satisfied and happy client.

6. If you could teach one lesson to your younger self about your area of work, what would it be?

Ask questions, listen and learn from others more experienced.

7. When a project presents you with a difficult challenge, what is your ‘go-to’ tactic for tackling it?

Share the problem or challenge with fellow work colleagues, peers and your project team – to harness their wide-ranging experience and varied knowledge. The majority of problems can invariably be overcome or a different solution implemented.

8. Finally, at the end of a long working week, what does your perfect weekend involve?

Valued relaxation time with my wife, Catherine, hopefully involving a pub or meal out. Watching my two boys play cricket or football, and managing Sutton Juniors football team, which I have had the pleasure of doing over the last 6 years.
