Rory Smith

Today we are going back behind the scenes at Ultimate for the next instalment in our ‘Meet the Team’ series. This week it’s the turn of Rory Smith, our Contracts & Estimating Apprentice.

1. Let’s start from the beginning. In brief, describe your role at Ultimate and what you do?

My job role at Ultimate is to Estimate and then manage the project from start to finish. I organise and structure the works that need carrying out on projects and make sure we meet any set deadlines.

2. What attracted you to Ultimate? Why did you apply for an apprenticeship with them?

I attended an apprentice fair at Craven College, I had in mind what I was looking to find there and out of all of the companies there Ultimate caught my eye and ticked all the boxes and more!

3. What type of work is most likely to spark the fire in your brain? What is your dream project?

The type of work that gets me most interested is when I get involved not just through emails and phone calls but in person and on site.

4. How would you describe the culture of Ultimate to an outsider?

I would describe it as a big competitor in quite a niche market. I would describe the work force as organised, friendly and hard working.

5. When all the hard work is over, what is the most satisfying aspect of your job at Ultimate?

I think the most satisfying part is once a project is finished you can stand back and look at what you’ve helped create.

6. When you are presented with a difficult challenge, what’s your ‘go-to’ tactic for tackling it?

If I need help with something I haven’t carried out before I will ask the team, then I will make sure I take it all in and remember it. I will also research the company in my spare time to get a better understanding of them, I find this helps with the understanding of a project and how to meet the client’s needs.

7. Finally, at the end of a long working week, what does your perfect weekend involve?

My perfect weekend involves clay pigeon shooting, seeing my Dad, seeing my girlfriend and also seeing mates.
