An outdoor swimming pool has scooped the top prize at the Wood Awards 2012.

Hurlingham Club Outdoor Pool, designed by David Morley Architects, won the Gold Award in the Wood Awards which is the UK’s premier architecture and furniture competition. Held every year to celebrate excellence in wood design, the Wood Awards are now in their tenth year.

Hurlingham Club Outdoor Pool faced stiff competition of an incredibly high standard by winning the Structural category, before going on the win the Gold Award.

The Hurlingham Club Outdoor Pool complex includes a 30m pool, children’s pool, beach area, changing room building and café which have all been integrated into the Club’s picturesque grounds on the banks of the River Thames.

The new pool has managed to successfully retain the charm of the original buildings whilst also providing modern, user-friendly swimming facilities through an efficient layout and improved natural lighting. A variety of wooden textures and woods, including spruce ply, birch and Siberian larch, bring the design together whilst clever use of life-saving rings and palm trees in planters add a quirky, nautical touch.

A great design that uses the beauty of natural wood surfaces to their very best advantage.
