Portland House

Ultimate successfully completed the transformation of Portland House, the former headquarters of Newcastle Building Society, into a contemporary office space designed for modern working. Located on New Bridge Street, the building is a unique blend of heritage and modern construction, combining a listed former maternity hospital with a 1990s-built extension across five storeys.

The renovation focused on sustainability and functionality, introducing eco-friendly lighting, water-saving shower & toilet facilities and carbon-neutral flooring. To support greener commuting, electric charge points for vehicles and e-bikes were also installed. A key highlight of the project was the restoration of the listed section of the building, which has been reimagined as a striking new reception area, blending historic character with modern design.

With the refurbishment now complete, Portland House is set to accommodate up to 600 office jobs, offering businesses a high-quality, sustainable workspace in the heart of Newcastle. This project showcases Ultimate’s expertise in revitalising historic spaces while integrating the latest workplace innovations, ensuring a perfect balance between heritage and future-focused office design.
