Equifax

Client Business Profile

Equifax are a global data and analytics company who offer credit reporting services to individuals and businesses across multiple markets. As a forward-thinking enterprise, Equifax prioritise innovation and sustainability, aligning with their vision of providing efficient and productive environments for employees. For their Nottingham office project, they wanted to create a dynamic, environmentally responsible office space to accommodate hybrid working – reflecting its commitment to reducing carbon emissions.

The Brief

Equifax faced several challenges in its existing office, including poor lighting, high energy consumption, and underutilisation of space. Their need to relocate became clear, and the objective was to design a high-quality workspace in the EastWest Building, capable of housing a 300-strong workforce.

The space had to embody the brand’s values, support hybrid working and significantly reduce energy consumption. Key goals for this project included improving employee productivity, providing more collaborative spaces and achieving better environmental efficiency while keeping the design adaptable for future growth.

The Design

The design concept focused on reflecting the Equifax brand’s values, emphasising innovation, collaboration and sustainability. Key elements included:

  • Retention of the building’s original shell, use of energy-efficient lighting, heating, and ventilation systems.
  • Maximised through strategic placement of spaces, ensuring consistent access to daylight throughout the office.
  • Inclusion of greenery and natural materials, promoting employee wellbeing and connecting the office with nature.
  • Subtle incorporation of Equifax’s brand identity through bold colours, dynamic forms, and tactile finishes.
  • Vibrant, noisier zones placed near social and circulation areas, while quieter spaces were designated for more focused tasks.
  • A designated space for personal well-being, contemplation, and use by neurodivergent colleagues or nursing mothers.

The Project

The move from briefing to detailed design occurred in just four weeks, with construction concluding in 10 months. Collaboration between the design studio Incognito, the landlord, and the contractor allowed for swift decision making and seamless project execution. The renovation of the 1970s building required careful consideration of its limitations, including low ceilings, which were maximised with perimeter HVAC solutions.

Throughout the project, sustainability was a priority. By working closely with the landlord, the team avoided unnecessary demolition, and the fitout made use of high-efficiency systems to lower the building’s energy footprint. The inclusion of flexible spaces for collaboration, private work areas, and a wellness room ensured that the office catered to both the professional and personal needs of its workforce.

The Results

The new Equifax office in Nottingham has been a resounding success. The energy efficient design resulted in a 50% reduction in energy consumption, aligning with Equifax’s sustainability goals. The variety of workspaces has improved employee satisfaction and the office’s aesthetic appeal and modern design have drawn positive feedback from staff, many of whom noted that the environment felt more engaging and reflective of the brand’s identity.

The inclusion of natural light, ergonomic seating and well-thought-out work settings contributed to improved well-being among employees. The flexible hybrid workspaces also supported the company’s shift to a more agile working model, further boosting overall satisfaction and attendance at the office. With the design’s futureproofing in place, the office is ready to accommodate the company’s growth strategy, allowing for increased occupancy as needed.
