Who are Knoll?
In 2017, Knoll are celebrating the centenary of one of the chief influences in the company’s story- Florence Knoll. Born in Michigan in 1917, Florence met Hans Knoll after to moving to New York to pursue a career in architecture. Hans Knoll himself came from a family of Stuttgart-based furniture manufacturers, who had moved to the states with the aim of bringing the cutting edge modernist design across the pond. In 1945, Florence Knoll established the Knoll Planning Unit which was an interior design wing of the furniture company, reflecting the approach of European modernism which Knoll hoped to introduce to the United States.
With the introduction of a distinctive graphic style and a new focus on textiles over the following years, Florence Knoll shaped transformed the company, helping to make them pioneers in office furniture design having as a result of their contribution to the look of modern professional spaces. The company has reintroduced pieces from their design archive for this centenary year, offering the chance for their customers and partners to own part of design history which feels as fresh today as it did when the company was first founded.
