Can carpet tiles reduce your carbon footprint?

Since 1994, leading modular flooring manufacturers, Interface, have been on a purpose-driven journey to sustainability, meeting their carbon neutral goal a year ahead of schedule in 2019. Their aspirational vision to eliminate any negative impact their company had on the environment, coined ‘Mission Zero’, came to fruition following a client querying their environmental stance.

Since then, Interface have reduced their plants’ greenhouse gas emissions by 96% and lessened the carbon footprint of their flooring products by more than 60%. This is the lowest footprint in their industry and the unavoidable remainder is purchased as carbon offsets that support renewable energy, fuel switching and reforestation.

Their Carbon Neutral Floors™ are now available as standard and at no extra cost to help clients meet their own sustainability goals. This includes their full range of carpet, rubber and luxury vinyl tiles, and their statistics show that designing and specifying 1000m2 of Interface flooring offsets the equivalent carbon emission of eleven round-trip flights between New York and Paris.

Mission Zero embedded environmental values into the company following 25 years of leadership and innovation in the field. After going above and beyond their original intentions, its successor, ‘Climate Take Back’, aims to influence a movement beyond the company’s own value chain. Their evolved commitment is to reverse climate change by not only avoiding negative impact but promising to leave a positive one.

The holistic approach to reaching their 2040 carbon negative goal includes an ongoing partnership with the Zoological Society of London on Net-Works®. This dual-initiative integrates developing-world coastal communities into their supply chain alongside tackling the growing environmental crisis of discarded fishing nets. Nylon from collected marine waste is recycled into new yarn for use in their tiles by leading manufacturer Aquafil.

As Interface continue to develop sustainable and restorative solutions, their significant stance remains: “If humanity changed the climate by mistake, we can change it with intent”. To find out more about their product range, please contact Ultimate to discuss.
