Knit! by Kvadrat
Kvadrat’s fourth textile design program, Knit!, launched both physically and digitally this month at Copenhagen’s 3 Days of Design. With a brief to illustrate the versatility of knitted textiles, an international group of 28 designers, artists and architects were enlisted to create individual works using Kvadrat Febrik.
Febrik was selected as the project canvas to highlight the form-shaping possibilities of knitted fabrics benefitted by its three-dimensional construction. Designers were chosen for their experimental nature with materials, form and colour, and the resulting pieces range from dynamic seating to unconventional utopian flight suits.
‘If I Had Wings’ by Zaven utilises the stretching properties of specified knits as well as their ability to easily adapt to different bodies and different movements. The pieces blend traditional upholstery techniques with astronaut-like designs to create brilliantly coloured flying overalls.
Showcasing the use of textiles beyond apparel, Paola Sakr’s experimental making method exhibits knitted fabrics as moulds for pottery forms. ‘Sundays’ draws influence from Sakr’s cultural background with a selection of tableware offering an insight into the traditional Lebanese dining room and associated hospitality rituals.
