Product Spotlight: Oceanic by Camira Fabrics
As holders of the Queen’s Award for Sustainable Development, Camira are highly regarded for pioneering a sustainable textile industry. Their recent Oceanic collection celebrates a collaboration with SEAQUAL Initiative in a drive to combat plastic pollution. Each metre of Oceanic fabric contains the equivalent of 26 plastic bottles and, as the name hints, is their first textile to include marine waste.
12 million tonnes of plastic enter our oceans each year and marine debris ingestion is harming more than 800 species. From waste to weave, the yarn used to create Oceanic is a blend of SEQUAL sourced ocean debris and post-consumer plastic diverted from landfill. For every 4 metres of fabric sold, 1kg of waste is removed from the ocean. Self-disclosing as ‘seasick of plastic’, Camira’s new addition remains true to environmental stewardship being in the fibres of the company’s being.
Camira believe in low impact and high performance, boasting decades of experience in manufacturing recycled fabrics. The distinctive diagonal pattern of Oceanic creates a multi-tonal effect when up close yet from afar, this appears much softer and blends into one. The intrinsic durability of the raw materials alongside the soft fluidity of the resulting textile make it suitable for upholstering both task and soft seating.
Blending style with conscience, Oceanic comprises of 16 colourways with muted, neutral hues reminiscent of shades visible on shorelines as well as vibrant, trend-led variants. Their versatile palette includes turquoise, soft yellow, coral and sage green. Camira have predicted we will see a shift to streamlined and neutral palettes post-COVID as going back to basics becomes an overarching trend.
