Project Completion: SpaMedica, Watford

Our recent completion saw the complete fit-out to the ground and first floor of SpaMedica’s new state-of-the-art eye hospital in Watford. SpaMedica is one of the UK’s leading providers of NHS eye healthcare services, with a 99% five-star rating from their patients on NHS UK.

Our works briefly consisted of strip-out, partitions and doors, general and bespoke joinery, suspended ceilings, decorations, floor finishes, ceramic tiling, mechanical installation, plumbing and electrical works.

Our flooring works included the fit out of new carpet tiles and vinyl flooring throughout. Because of its durable, easy maintenance and slip resistance qualities, Polyflor’s heterogeneous vinyl was specified to high-traffic areas, such as the reception, corridors and staircases. The striking linear composition of the replicated ‘wooden plank’ design in the reception brings in elements of biophilia, alongside the deeper tones of the bespoke walnut desk.

Heavy contract flexible vinyl is featured to the treatment, theatre and discharge rooms to facilitate frequent and stringent cleaning measures. Walls to the pre-theatre, theatre prep and theatre rooms were specified in BioClad’s antimicrobial hygiene cladding which inhibits bacteria growth and has been tested to reduce microbes by 99.9% in just two hours. This contains zero VOCs and provides an easy to clean, durable surface ideal for operating theatres.

To facilitate the safe storage of pharmaceuticals, white gloss lockable units were fitted to necessary rooms. Plywood pattresses were built into partitions as a supporting structure for fitted units.

To maintain patient privacy, partitioning screens were fitted to the day ward. The curves to the tops of the laminate panels soften the feel.

Alongside the installation of doors, frame, skirtings, base and wall units to various rooms, splashbacks and worktops, our joinery works included the supply and fit of a complete staffroom kitchen. The clean, muted grey theme seen throughout is carried through to the kitchen which consists of grey gloss units contrasting against a dark grey gloss tiles splashback.

Following the project’s completion, James Clarke, Head of Property at SpaMedica, commented: “We have worked with Ultimate on a number of eye hospital fit-out projects that require a high standard of finish. Steve, Jamie and their site teams have been responsive and their attention to detail is excellent. We look forward to working with them again on more hospitals and it’s great to now see our patients receiving treatment at our new, state-of-the-art hospital”.
