The company was incorporated as Steelcase in 1954 and has continued to lead the way as one of the largest office furniture suppliers and manufacturers in the world, first producing the largest single shipment in the industry in 1973, supplying 400 truckloads of furniture to the Chicago Sears Tower. The company is now anchored by three core brands – Steelcase, Coalesse and Turnstone – and despite its long history, Steelcase is always looking and moving forwards, ensuring its furniture makes use of the most advanced technology and insights. Their Innovation Centre is a hub for experimentation, in which workspaces are imagined and tested to ensure human insight influences their designs. Steelcase focus attention to detail on both the micro and the macro, considering the body of the office worker and the space of the office, at the same time as looking at large scale international corporations’ carbon footprints and the state of the environment. At their core is an awareness of the importance of connectivity and flow. From the spine which supports the rest of the body in productive work, to the importance of presenting open, connected office spaces that support collaboration and create a positive work culture, to an appreciation that small changes to furniture can help the environment on a wider scale. This allows Steelcase to focus their attention on how things affect one another, minimising damage and maximising gain.

The Body

In order to support office work at the smallest scale, Steelcase pay great attention to how furniture affects the body. With extensive ergonomic features, Steelcase’s office chairs, for example, are tailored to support the body’s natural posture, which is extremely important for those spending over 8 hours a day sitting at a desk. This has involved extensive research on Steelcase’s behalf, including posture observations of over 2000 people across six continents before designing their ‘Gesture’ chair in 2013, to ensure it supports all natural postures across people of all body shapes. The technology of this chair includes a 360 arm which mimics the movement of a human arm, supporting the arm when typing, texting, swiping or drawing. The 3D LiveBack of this chair also contours to the user’s spine, simulating the natural movement of the spine and supporting its flexibility. The headrest also allows for variation in head size, neck length and range of motion. The technology of these features allows for customised comfort for any user, with the understanding that each body is unique.

The Office

In addition to the impact of furniture on the body, Steelcase understand the importance of furniture organisation in shaping the environment of the office. Steelcase have recognised four foundational space typologies which they believe important for any office environment: personal spaces, such as individual pods, to allow privacy and comfort; collaboration spaces, which support meetings and workshops across a range of technologies to account for remote working and internationality; social spaces, which support the building of integrated community in the office; and learning spaces to allow teams to continue adapting and developing. Beyond this, however, Steelcase recognise that different design layouts support different working cultures, and so their website includes intricate and customisable space footprints for both workplaces and home offices, considering the importance of distinct spaces and the flow between them. Steelcase have also responded to new ways of working, particularly in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, directing attention towards redesigning offices to accommodate for ongoing changes to regulations and an increase in remote working, enhancing collaboration between colleagues regardless of location.

The Planet

On a wider scale, Steelcase recognise the potential impact of their international scope on the environment and have sought to centralise sustainability in all of their work. They have been honoured by The Wall Street Journal as one of the most sustainably managed companies in the world and are now carbon neutral and working towards carbon negative. They are also working towards finding more responsible manufacturing processes and materials. As an example, their most popular ‘Leap’ chair is made of up to 35% recycled content and is 94% recyclable. Since it was introduced, the amount of manufacturing space used to produce Leap has also been reduced by 75% to reduce energy consumption. So, by working with Steelcase to fit your office, they can also help you to achieve Green Building Standards. In addition, their furniture is of very high quality, and in their limited lifetime warranty they put their money where their mouth is in attesting to the fact that their chairs are built to last.
